I'm still smiling

May 13 2005

By Tony Collins, Coventry Evening Telegraph

BOBBY Davro is on the comeback trail - in more ways than one.

The comedian and impressionist has had the sort of misfortune that would make most people weep.

But Bobby, who made his TV debut as far back as 1981, is on the mend both professionally and personally.

A new UK tour will re-acquaint him with audiences after several years largely spent in the television wilderness.

Yet it's in his personal life that the real therapy has taken place.

Bobby, who appears at the Alexandra Theatre on Monday, May 16, two years after starring in the city as Aladdin in panto, endured the public break-up of his marriage to wife Trudi over Christmas 2003.

It led to police being called to their house and reports that he even contemplated suicide.

Now divorced, Bobby, aged 47, frankly admits: "It has been a bad year, but that's all over now.

"It was a particularly difficult period but I'm gradually getting back on my feet. I've gotten over the pain now and very much looking ahead to the future."

That future involves his "three beautiful girls" - daughters Brittany, Tier-ney and Marnie - and a new girlfriend. But he is adamant there are no wedding plans.

"I'm dusting off my courting skills, but once bitten twice shy," he adds.

The positive future also involves the all-new Bobby Davro Show which will feature comic Mike Lancaster, singer Anne Nolan and a six-piece band.

And Birmingham fans can look forward to a segment of the show devoted to city rock legend Ozzy Osbourne.

"I do a very good Ozzy. "The sad part is that I look very much like him."

He adds: "There is very much a need for variety, but it's about educating people to come in and see it.

"People like me, who haven't been on television in the last few years, don't get the exposure anymore because TV is very disposable. One minute you can do really well and the next minute the opportunities are simply not there.

"It's very frustrating for performers of my ilk and generation that they get pushed aside by reality shows such as Pop Idol."

Bobby, who says he would love the opportunity to host a game show on TV, is turning his attention to acting by auditioning for parts including Holby City and Footballers' Wives.

He also rejected the chance to appear on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here at the time of his marriage problems.

"I'm not keen to do that. "I don't want to be that desperate that I want to shove spiders down my underpants," he says. l Bobby Davro appears at the Alex on May 16. Tickets are priced £15 and are available by calling 0870 607 7544.
