THE final event of the seven event Midland SPOCO series of hilly time trials was completed this weekend and Gareth Lewis from Solihull Cycling Club claimed an excellent sixth.
In this series, well organised by our own Alex Zebedee, it was points from the best five of the seven counting events and Alex also rode well herself - finishing third lady and in the middle of the overall table for all riders.
The Series was won in fine style by Jamie Burrell of MI Racing.
On the Vets scene the second running of the Ernie Clements Memorial two-day race took place over the weekend.
A full field was present and after Saturday's prologue TT and afternoon race had concluded, the club's riders had some good placements in the 55+ group.
On day two, in the 48-mile race, Kevin Shand rode away for a super solo effort and behind him some tactical racing took place. Ivor Thomas from the club stole off the front with about five miles to go and opened an important gap.
In the hectic sprint for the line the gap closed but not enough to prevent him from taking seconnd. His important time bonuses also gave him second overall in the 55+ group, behind Kevin Shand, and second in D category (55-60) with Dave Rutherford taking third in E, Bob Richards second in F and Dave Elliott second in G to round off a successful weekend. ..SUPL:
