The green green grass of home

Tony and Dorothy Hewitt's stunning garden

The kerbside appeal of Westmoor in Lady Byron Lane, a stone's throw from the heart of Solihull, does even the faithful owners admit, little to inspire.

Traditionally tidy rarely fails to get the people queuing at the door to take a look inside.

But that is their loss.

The current owners Tony and Dorothy Hewitt are moving on after living in the five bedroom home with views over Copt Heath golf course for more than 20 years.

In some ways it will be a wrench but unlike previous owners they will not be taking radical action.

Tony says, "We really love the garden which was brought here by one of the previous owners when they moved."

This first owners belonged to the brewing family Mitchell & Butlers who were selling their home to developers in Edgbaston. Rather than abandon the garden that had been lovingly created over many years they literally had the plants, shrubs and water feature moved to the house.

"It is easy to understand why," says Tony. "There is something special about the garden. I think it is the simplicity of the design that really seems to work. We love it."

The property was then sold to one of the members of the Lloyds family who set up the successful chain of chemists.

"Before we bought the house we had been invited to social get-togethers and so we knew what it was like. It seemed to good an opportunity to miss when we heard it was being sold so we snapped it up," explains Tony, who still enjoys hosting large gatherings at the house.

The garden, with excellent privacy thanks to the maturing growing trees, is a wonderful backdrop for get-togethers - heralding the arrival of each season.

Now the rhododendrons, with their annual promise of  bursting into glorious colour, have lost their blooms but have made way for shades of green from the mature trees to the perfectly-looking lawn.

"The garden is really easy to maintain but we have someone who does the lawn and takes real pride in the stripes."

Their new home will still have views over the golf course and Dorothy admits, "Although neither of us play it is still a wonderful view. We would miss it."

Not that one of Tony's current business pursuits encourages much room for envy.

He no longer has a role in Dr Chocolate, the company he set up Dr Chocolate which enables him to find time for one of his first loves - Formula 1 Racing.

Now one of his business interests is chartering luxury yachts in the harbour at Monaco when the Grand Prix teams transform the principality.

"I love the hospitality game but it is hard work," said Tony, who has a wealth of racing paraphernalia gracing the walls of his first floor office. The home is deceptively spacious and Dorothy admits, "Many of friends say it is like the Tardis."

She may have a point.

The first floor landing is a room in itself and the master bedroom, complete with ensuite, has the envious views over the golf course. The guest bedroom also boasts an ensuite - perfect for when the couple's daughter, Kate, returns to the family home.

"We have had a lot of fun in this house over the years," says Dorothy, who is looking forward to celebrating the couple's 35 years of marriage.

"The time is simply right to move. This is a family home and is in a wonderful location. We think it is something special."

And this time the garden stays put.
