Try your hand at a poem in this style

By Julie Boden

In future issues I would like you to experiment with a variety of forms including villanelles, sestinas, rondels and triolets.

For this first poem though, I only ask that you observe the place you are in carefully, feel the rhythm, include details and write in quatrains (four line stanzas) in which the first three lines rhyme and the fourth line of each stanza ends with the same refrain.

Try to feel the rhythm so that it reinforces the meaning of your words. In this poem each stanza balances precariously on an eleven syllable end line.

The 14 syllable opening lines of the earlier stanzas are there to push the questioning on and the 15 syllable lines in the last two stanzas are an attempt to restore equilibrium and to bring us back to the reality of the concierge and is, I suppose, my own preparation to leave the secret garden and walk back out into the world.

Subject matter:

Please enter a poem according to the form above inspired by one of the following:

* The Rotunda
* The RSC Stratford
* A secret garden in a city

Submit your poem here. Submitted poems will be published on the website.

Every month Julie will discuss a different form of poetry and give you three new subjects to write about.
