Lament for the Rotunda

By Heather Wastie

Rolling against the Brummie blue,
bringing a tear to a rose-coloured eye,
Rotunda, we will remember you:

a rock with Birmingham stamped right through.
Roaring and reeling you heave a sigh,
rolling against the Brummie blue,

and bow to developers bored with the view.
Rotate your gaze as we wave you goodbye
(Rotunda, we will remember you)

and lift your head high as all heroes do.
O rise to your feet as we deify,
rolling against the Brummie blue,

and when they finally round on you
and wrench out your roots without telling you why,
Rotunda, we will remember you.

We'll list to the wind as it whistles through,
for there'll be one hell of a hole in the sky,
rolling against the Brummie blue.
Rotunda we will remember you.

By Heather Wastie, July 1993 ( when the building was under threat of demolition)
