A Secret Garden in a City

By Jackie Westwood

My garden in the city is so secret no-one's been
To my oasis of contentment attired in shades of green,
The shrubs with shape and texture create a restful scene,
It's my haven from the world all around.

With paths of limestone yellow which meander through the trees,
To the strands of drooping grasses swaying in the breeze,
Scented flowers of every hue sought by butterflies and bees
It's a haven for the insects all around.

In my garden in the city there's one thing now I know,
I love the Autumn season when the leaves are all aglow.
Squirrels gather acorns, as apples swell and grow
Its a haven for the wildlife all around.

In the dim, dark days of winter the trees and shrubs are bare
And the snow is swirling round creating havoc everywhere.
The scene inside my garden is quite beyond compare
A haven for the creatures underground.

As I walk out in my garden in the city every day,
And listen to the birdsong in the early days of May
I sense that from this garden I'll never want to stray.
It's my haven from the busy world around.
