Ancient site a rubbish tip

Aug 4 2006

By Andy Walker, Solihull News

AS a site of archaeological interest some people would view Hobs Moat Monument as a sacred spot of Solihull.

Well it was once the home of a 12th Century fortified manor house and is a fine example of a mediaeval moated homestead.

But recent visitors to the site, just off Hobs Moat Road, may feel the area has descended into nothing short of a rubbish dump.

'An absolute disgrace' was how dog walker Derek Davies, who has lived in the area for 30 years, described it.

"This is the worst I've ever seen it, the rubbish there at the moment has been there for five weeks," said Derek.

"It's a real eyesore. Some people just use it as a dumping ground, there's plastic bottles and chip papers everywhere. I've seen rats down there.

"It's been drawn to the council's attention, It needs somebody high up to go down there and see whether they are doing their job properly."

Hours after the Solihull News contacted the council, the mess was swiftly cleared up.

The council's environment manager, Alan Brown, said: "We will keep an eye on the site, and if necessary, clean it more frequently. "If anyone wants to report littering or fly-tipping, call 0121 704 8000 or fill in the form at www.solihull.gov.uk."
