Out of Africa for toad in the hold

HITCHHIKERS are more commonly known to stand on the roadside, hoping for generous drivers to take them to their destination.

So imagine the surprise of one holidaymaker who returned from The Gambia, only to find an African toad had hitched a lift in his suitcase.

Farres Powell got back to his home in Small Heath and was unpacking his bag when the amphibian hopped out.

He said: "I was chatting with my partner about how good the holiday had been when we looked down to see this toad emerge from the bag.

"We couldn't believe it - it was the same toad we'd seen on the hotel balcony the night before while we were playing cards."

After the alarming discovery, the 40-year-old who lives in Kenelm Road got in touch with Ray Dedicoat who runs Hollytrees Animal Rescue Trust in Hollywood.

Mr Dedicoat said: "It was 40 degrees when they left The Gambia so we've got him on a heated pad.

"We're hoping someone will be able to offer us some advice but there's no way I'd hand him over to be put down."
