CHILDREN from across Solihull are being encouraged to put their best foot forward and use their legs to speed them to school this week as part of an initiative by Solihull Council.
An estimated 13,000 youngsters are expected to take part in the venture from 43 schools, in support of a national campaign funded by the Department of Transport, Scottish Government and Transport for London.
The average school run using a car is thought to cost an average family £400 per year in fuel and the benefits of walking include exercise and fresh air helping to keep youngsters fit and active.
Recent government figures suggest that one in three 11 year olds are overweight or obese and 41 per cent of pupils are driven by car to school.
