Let's combat graffiti yobs

Nov 10 2006

By Lisa Wright, Solihull News

GRAFFITI and anti-social behaviour have led a Shirley businessman to call for an increased police presence in the area.

Bob Wright, pictured right, runs Forest Transformers and Transform Tanning and Aqua Detox on Haslucks Green Road, one of around seven businesses damaged with spray paint, and scratches to their glass windows on Sunday night.

Bob estimates the culprit, who used the tag name 'Phont', could have caused up to £20,000 worth of damage to the traders, and is now demanding police step up their efforts to secure their properties.

"Before Christmas somebody broke the window," he said. "It's an ongoing thing. We need some police presence of an evening and I would like to see if there is a chance of surveillance cameras in this area."

He said gangs of up to 15 youths congregate round the shops at all times outside school hours.

"At the end of the day it is becoming clear something has to be done."

Acting Sergeant Martin Harrison said: "The plan is to get more officers down there, to have a much higher visibility down there.

"Graffiti, anti-social behaviour and criminal damage all rates very high on our priorities."
