Boycott call at city dog track

Apr 27 2007

By Lisa Wright, Solihull News

PROTESTERS flanked Hall Green Greyhound Stadium recently in a bid to persuade race-goers to boycott the sport.

Supporters of the international greyhound protection group Greyhound Action held banners and placards and distributed leaflets to people attending a race meeting at the York Road track.

Protests also took place at Perry Barr.

Greyhound Action's UK coordinator, Tony Peters, said: "The demonstrations were very successful, especially as the protesters managed to persuade a number of people not to go to the dog racing and many others said they would never attend a greyhound race meeting ever again."

He claimed that tracks are each responsible, on average, for the slaughter of about 500 greyhounds every year. "These include dogs considered 'not good enough' for racing, as well as those disposed of at the end of their racing 'careers'," he said.

However Stephen Rea general manager at Hall Green dogs, dismissed the accusations saying they were "very much aware of our welfare responsibilities".

"When you try and talk to them they just shout abuse at you and don't even want to talk about the fact that every retired greyhound goes through our own home finding scheme. We don't put any dogs down at all," he said.

Mr Rea said he had invited representatives to visit their retirement kennels, but that no one had taken up the offer.

"We are very much aware of our welfare responsibilities."
