Q: I've heard a great deal about Reiki, and how it has wonderful healing benefits. What is it and what exactly area its benefits - is it just another faddy treatment we'll hear little of in a few months? ..TEXT; R Howlett

"Reiki certainly isn't a fad, it has actually been around for thousands of years, but only brought back into modern times by Reiki Masters.

The name Reiki means 'universal life force energy' and it's just that. A Reiki practitioner is not performing the healing, but simply being used as the connector that passes this onto you.

This is a non intrusive treatment and you can remain fully clothed.

Sometimes the benefits are subtle and it's not a case of you jumping off the couch feeling that anything specific has happened, but this energy will itself find where you need it most and you can have a feeling of warmth or coolness as the Reiki practitioner moves their hands down through the seven chakras of the body.

As Reiki only works for the highest possible good, it is for mind, emotions and spirit and may help with aches and pains, stressful conditions and after surgery to speed up the healing process.

Reiki is widely used now and is becoming more and more popular. Reiki is something that you can use on yourself as well as others, and even on your pets if they seem a little unwell.

If you want to be trained and attuned in Reiki, then do find a good Reiki practitioner who will offer this. It will cost you a lot of money, and the training comes in three stages.

You do not have to train in all three stages, but you receive and are able to channel more 'energy' the more you do.

If you don't wish to have Reiki, then meditation, yoga and tai chi are all good for you, balancing the mind and body.

I do think that we are getting back to the wonders and knowledge that mankind had hundreds and thousands of years ago and even now we are only now beginning to understand the benefits.
