Symphony Hall sonnets

Mar 7 2005

No stranger to reading her work in unusual places - she once performed at Tesco's Five Ways - Julie Boden has become Symphony Hall's first ever Poet-in-Residence - thought to be the first such position at a concert venue.

Not bad for someone whose first poetry success was winning a Wall's ice cream national limerick writing competition aged nine.

Born and educated in Sutton Coldfield, Julie is a former Birmingham Poet Laureate who began her new residency last month, with a Valentine's Day recital entitled The Amorous Organ.

As well as writing and performing poetry related to events at Symphony Hall, Julie's job will see her work with children and adults on themed schemes such as the planned women writers workshop based on Bartok's Duke Bluebeard's Castle and autumn primary singing project.

"Symphony Hall presents a fantastic opportunity," says Julie.

"It's a wonderful building with so many first-class performances taking place here.

"I love the people of Birmingham, they love Symphony Hall, and we all love music - so it's great to have this opportunity to write them, and this place, into words. I'm hoping the public will want to participate - it would be fantastic if we could create a symphony of different voices representing the people of the city."
